Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen has sought Russia's cooperation to send back Rohingya refugees from Cox’s Bazar to their homeland Myanmar.

He made the request when new Russian ambassador in Dhaka Alexander Vikentyevich Mantytskiy called on him on Sunday.

Mentioning the context of Bangladesh's special relationship with Russia, Dr. Momen said Bangladesh gratefully remembers Russia's contribution to the liberation war of 1971 and the formation of post-war countries.

Shortly after the independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman visited Russia in March 1972 at the invitation of the then President of Soviet Union and thanked the Russian government and people for their help in the liberation war of Bangladesh.

The new ambassador reiterated Russia's interest in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-Russia diplomatic relations.

The foreign minister said both countries could celebrate the occasion jointly.

He hoped that the Russian Foreign Minister would be present at the opening ceremony of the Rooppur nuclear power plant in 2023.
