Stocks extend losing streak

Stocks extended a losing streak for the fifth straight week, and the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) lost more than Tk 36,000 crore in market cap during the last five weeks.

Market analysts said most of the investors took a cautious mood to avoid further losses amid continuously falling share prices.

On the other hand, the capital market witnessed a downward trend on selling pressure from large institutional investors, they added.

Investors fear further losses as the market is facing a downward trend continuously, they said adding that, for this reason, ordinary investors have also sold shares after seeing the institutional investors. So the market price continued to fall, they mentioned.

They have urged the investors not to listen to the rumors and get out of this situation.

Investors should invest in good financial-base companies after analyzing, they mentioned.

On the other hand, newly listed stocks saw price-correction in a few weeks as those securities witnessed an upward trend continuing after listing in the market, they added.

The market-cap on the DSE stood at Tk 465,658.2 crore on Thursday, down Tk 36,051.37 crore from Tk 501,709.6 crore on 14 January, 2021.

The DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), decreased by 433.32 points or 7.33 percent in the past five consecutive weeks to close at 5475.98 points on Thursday.

The DSE 30 Index comprising blue chips went up by 131 points to close at 2105.57 and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) decreased by 19.09 points to finish at 1,242.48 during the time.

Total turnover went up to Tk 4,437 billion last week from Tk 4,086 billion in the previous week.

Robi Axiata was the week's worst loser and was down 12.28 percent to close at Tk 39.30 on Thursday.

Out of 366 issues traded on the DSE, 127 ended higher, 122 closed lower and 117 remained unchanged on the DSE floor.

On the other hand, the port city bourse, the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) also saw a rapid fall with its selective category index (CSCX) losing 846 points in the past five consecutive weeks to close at 9,544 points on Thursday.

The All-Share Price Index (CASPI) of the CSE was lower by 1,404 points during the time to close at 15821.26 points on Thursday.

Of the issues traded, 130 declined, 90 advanced and 75 remained unchanged on the CSE last week.

The port city's bourse traded 50 million shares and mutual fund units with turnover value of Tk 169 crore during the last week.
