Case filed against 5,000 unidentified people

Police filed a case against at least 5,000 identified people for their alleged involvement in the clashes that claimed four and injured 100 others in Borhanuddin upazila in the district on Sunday as the protest sparked after a slanderous comment posted on a hacked Facebook account, reports BSS.

“Police filed a case against those identified people on charge of police assault and murdering of four persons in the clash that took place on Sunday in the district,” said Enamul Haque, Officer in Charge (OC) of Borhanuddin Police Station. “The overall situation of the district is now under the control of the police, M Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of Barishal range, told the journalists.

On Sunday, at least four people died and over 100 others were injured in the clashes between police and locals in the upazila. At least 10 policemen were among the injured. Locals organised the protest rally to demand action against a youth -Biplob Chandra Shuvo, son of Chandra Mohon Baidha, at Kachia union of the upazila, who allegedly demeaned Prophet Muhammad (SM) on Facebook posted on Friday evening.

The violence erupted after hundreds of locals gathered for a rally under the banner of ‘Muslim Tawhidi Janata’ in protest against the social media post.
