‘Work together to ensure chemical safety’

21st BNACWC GM held

The 21st general meeting of the Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention (BNACWC) was held Tuesday at the Multipurpose Hall of the Armed Forces Department in Dhaka Cantonment. 

According to the ISPR, Chairman of BNACWC and Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Lt General Walker-uz-Zaman presided over the general meeting. 

A total of 43 senior officers from various ministries, organizations and armed took part in the meeting along with members of BNACWC.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the implementation of the decisions of the 20th general meeting. The meeting also discussed the important issues to be done in the future for the more effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in Bangladesh. 

Many other important discussions and decisions were taken about the consolidation of overall chemical safety in Bangladesh and effective management to prevent chemical accidents. 

Meanwhile, the mandate of the Chemical Disaster Response Team (CDRT) constituted by the forces to respond to accidents related to chemical warfare agents in Bangladesh has been finalized.  Capacity building work to deal any chemical accident is underway. 

A web portal was launched for registration of concerned organizations with BNACWC for proper regulating  of the  activities related to scheduled chemicals in the country. For this purpose, the steps taken to modernize the relevant laws and regulations were also presented in the meeting.

The meeting was also apprised of the results of the inspection of Benapole land port by the expert inspection team of BNACWC and the actions taken by the port authorities in the interest of chemical safety.

 Lt. General Walker-uz-Zaman gave special directions to consolidate the safety management of chemical products in other ports like Chittagong port. He also stressed on the preparation of important hospitals of the country to treat victims of chemical disasters and specialized training for doctors and medical personnel. 

 The participant of the meeting pledged  to work together to ensure overall chemical safety of the country including scheduled chemicals in Bangladesh.
