Women MPs elected to JS reserved seats take oath

The 50 members of parliament, elected to reserved seat for women, took oath on Wednesday, a day after the gazette notification published by the Election Commission.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath to the 50 reserved seat MPs at the Oath Room in Parliament.

Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku, Whips Iqbalur Rahim, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, Nazrul Islam Babu and Shaimum Sarwar Kamal, among others, were present at the oath-taking ceremony.   

The Speaker first administered 

the oath to the 48 reserved seat MPs of the ruling Awami League led allies. She then administered the oath to the two reserved seat MPs from the Jatiya Party.

After taking oath, the lawmakers signed the attendance book.

All the 50 women MPs were elected to their seats uncontested. 

In the January 7 general elections, the AL won 223 seats while the independent candidates won 62 seats, Jatiya Party won 11 seats, AL led 14-party alliance ---Jatiya Samjtantrik Dal and Workers Party---got one seat each and Kalyan Party got one seat.

As per the rule, a party got one reserved seat against six members. In that contest, the ruling party gets 48 seats while the JP will get the rest two seats.

Ruling Awami League gets 48 seats out of the 50 reserved seats in parliament as independent lawmakers have extended their support to the AL.
