The Mayor of Washington, D. C. has declared ‘Mujib Year’ beginning March 17, 2020 to March 17, 2021 as the year of celebration of the centennial birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a proclamation in the US capital on Monday congratulating the people of Bangladesh on this special occasion.
The proclamation says the United States Department of State cities “Bangladesh as a global example of a democratic, tolerant, pluralistic, and moderate nation” whose friendship is important to the United States.
It says “under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh is transforming and thriving into a “Golden Bangla” as dreamt by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The proclamation also says “the Embassy of Bangladesh has contributed to the growth and cultural diversity of Washington, DC.”
“Now, therefore, I, the Mayor of Washington, DC, congratulate all the people of Bangladesh on this special occasion, and hereby declared March 17, 2020 – march 17, 2021, as ‘Mujib Year’,” read the proclamation.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina together with her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi would inaugurate the yearlong celebration on March 17 in Dhaka. India supported Bangladesh in 1971 war of independence.
Bangladesh will celebrate the Mujib Year throughout the world and link it to the country’s graduation to middle-income country in 2021.
