Verdict only in 3 days

For the first time in the country, the verdict of a drug case has been announced in Khulna within just three working days of the trial began. The verdict sentenced the accused Shamrat to six months’ imprisonment for keeping cannabis, six months in prison for keeping yaba and another month of rigorous imprisonment for failing to pay of a fine of Tk 10,000.

Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court-4 judge Dr. Atiqus Samad announced the verdict at 11am on Tuesday. According to the lawyers, Labanchara police station men arrested Shamrat on December 24, 2019 from Muktar Hossain Bazar Main Road with 30 grams of cannabis and six pieces of yaba tablets. 

SI Kazi Akram Hossain of Labanchara police station filed a case in this regard. The investigating officer of the case SI Nasir Uddin submitted charge sheet in the court on February 9 this year. The case was sent in the court on October 21. The verdict was announced on Tuesday after the testimony of 6 witnesses on 22 October and the argument on 25 October.

Shahra Irani Pia, APP Advocate of the court, said that the speedy trial and verdict was possible due to the sincere efforts of the judge of the court, the lawyers of the state and the lawyers of the defence. Further attempts will be made to expedite the disposal of 729 drug cases pending in this court, she added.
