Two students killed, 50 injured in separate train mishaps

Two students were crushed under the wheels of two trains in the capital city of Dhaka and in Joypurhat district while at least 50 passengers on a stationary train at a Lalmonirhat rail station were injured as a locomotive engine hit it when it was being changed on Saturday afternoon 

In Dhaka, a 15-year-old boy died after a train hit him at Nakhalpara Railway Gate in Dhaka’s Tejgaon on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Md Moaz (15) of West Nakhalpara.

The deceased’s uncle said Kausar Zaman said Moaz has intellectual disability. While crossing the railway line this morning, a high-speed train hit him.

Later, he (Moaz) was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition whether the on-duty doctor declared him dead, he added.

DMCH Police Outpost in-Charge Inspector Bachchu Mia confirmed the matter. In Joypurhat, a college student was killed after being hit by a train in Biswaspara area of the district town onn Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Jihan,18, son of Syed Sujan, resident of Biswaspara area of the district town. He was a 2nd year student of TMSS Technical College in Parulia area of the district.

The accident occurred when Jihan was playing free-fire game on his mobile phone sitting on the railway line near his house after eating Shihri. Around 4:30am, a Chilahati-bound express train hit him, leaving him seriously injured, officer-in-charge (OC) of Santahar Railway Police Station Moktar Hossain said.

He was taken to Joypurhat General Hospital, the OC said.

Later, he was shifted to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital for better treatment, where he died around 10:30am while undergoing treatment, OC added.

50 injured as engine hits stationary train in Lalmonirhat

In Lalmonirhat, at least 50 passengers on a stationary train at a Lalmonirhat rail station were injured in a hit by a locomotive engine while it was being changed on Saturday afternoon.

Two of the injured passengers were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital due to critical condition.

Witnesses said the Dinajpur’s Parbatipur-bound commuter train carrying passengers from Lalmonirhat’s Burimari made a stopover at Lalmonirhat rail station for changing the engine on Saturday afternoon.

Locomotive driver Gour Govinda took the previous engine to the locomotive shed and came back with another engine from there to attach with the train, they said.   

The incident happened when the new engine hit the stationary train while it was being attached, leaving at least 50 passengers injured, they said, adding that the injured were taken to Lalmonirhat Railway Hospital and two of them were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. After receiving first aid, the injured passengers went to Parbatipur by the train later.

Confirming the matter, Lalmonirhat Rail Station Master Nurunnabi Islam said a written complaint was lodged against the locomotive driver to the department and actions will be taken against him upon his return from Dinajpur.

Lalmonirhat’s Railway Divisional Manager Abdus Salam couldn’t be reached over mobile phone despite repeated attempts.
