Traffic too slow on major highways

As the day of Eid is getting closer, the pressure of vehicles and passengers on the highway is increasing. Different scenarios could be observed on different highways, launch terminals and train stations on Friday.

In some places the traffics were moving at a slow pace and in some places, long tailbacks were created.

There were a lot of traffic on the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways in Gazipur. A long tailback of 15 kilometres was created on the west side of Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj. The pressure of traffic increased on the road as the day advanced.

A long tailback of motorcycles were created from the roundabout on the eastern side of Bangabandhu Bridge to the toll plaza which caused extreme misery to the passengers and drivers of motorcycles.

Under normal circumstances, 3-4 lanes are kept open on Bangabandhu Bridge for toll collection. However, before Eid, the traffic on the highway increases several times more. For this reason, toll is collected in seven lanes during this time for buses, trucks, microbuses and other vehicles on the bridge to reduce traffic congestion.

Vehicles were moving at slow pace on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway on Friday. It is feared that the traffic congestion might increase today as more homebound people will start leaving the capital at the last minute.

On the other hand, traffic congestion was relatively low on the Dhaka-Aricha, Nabinagar-Chandra highways and Savar area.

Passengers of the southern region left for their village homes via Shimulia-Banglabazar launch terminal from different places including the capital Dhaka to celebrate Eid.

Passengers started arriving at the launch terminals on Friday morning. The sufferings of the overflowing crowd worsened during noon due to the scorching heat of the sun.

In addition to the 24-hour ferry service, all launches are in operation to cope with the pressure of passengers.

People started flocking to the railway stations since early morning. There was a huge crowd of homebound people at Kamalapur railway station on Friday.

Most of the people at the station were seen waiting for the train with their families before the appointed time. Passengers at the station informed that most of the trains left on time since morning till noon.
