The capital city will take a new look and be free from traffic congestion by 2030, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said. He came up with the statement while inaugurating the installation of metro rail's tracks at Diabari in the city. The construction work of 20-kiolomtere-long elevated metro-rail service from Uttara to Motijheel is going on in full swing.
“The capital Dhaka will have new look when the works of six metro rail lines will be completed by 2030,” Obaidul Quader, also Awami General Secretary said. “The construction work of MRT Line-1 and 5 will begin immediately. The present scenario of capital Dhaka’s transport movement will also be changed by 2030," Obaidul Quader said.
“The metro-rail system will be fully operational by 2021. It is the dream project of the youths. And MRT Line-6 from Kamalapur to Uttara will be opened in the month of Victory Day next year." He said the government has been making all-out efforts to make the journey of comuters comfortable on roads and streets.
“The overall construction work progress of 20-kiolomtere-long elevated metro-rail service from Uttara to Motijheel stood at 40 percent now, while 50 percent work between Uttara and Agargaon has been done,” Obaidul Quader said. He added at present 8.05 kilometer viaduct out of 12-kilometer metro rail between Uttara and Agargaon has become visible.
On 16 February 2019 Japanese company started building of bogies for MRT Line-6 under the package 8th (Rolling Stock and Depot Equipment Collection), the project details said. It said under fifth packages, 3.195-kilometer viaduct and three metro stations are being built from Agargaon to Karwarbazar while 4.92-kilometer viaduct metro-rail from Karwanbazar to Motijheel having four stations is being constructed under sixth packages.
Under the package, utility services including gas, water pipes and lines have already been shifted and check boring and test pile were completed from Agaragaon to Karwarnbazar. Besides, the construction progress of 4.922 kilometer viaduct and four stations of the metro rail from Karwanbazar to Motijheel rose to 16.74 percent.
According to the officials, construction work of Mass-Rapid Transport (MRT) Line-6, the country’s first elevated metro rail system in Dhaka city under the Fast Track projects, is going on in full swing with a target to open for public by December 16, 2021. According to the project details, the total 20-kilomtere metro-rail project is being done in eight packages while 40 percent work from Agargaon to Motijheel has been done and 52 percent progress civil work of the depot area under the package-II became visible and the rest of work will be finished soon.
Construction of check boring, test pile, main pile and eye guarders under the package 3rd and 4th has been completed, while construction of 701 pile caps out of 766, 348 pier heads out of 393, 3,949 precast segments casting out of 5,149 were finished. Currently 11.73-kilomtere viaduct and nine stations are being constructed from Uttara to Agargaon under 3rd and 4th packages.
Once completed, the rail service, which has 16 stations, will be able to carry 60,000 passengers per hour, reducing travel time from Uttara to Motijheel to at least less than an hour from the current two hours.
