Dhaka witnessed severe traffic congestion on Wednesday as students of seven government colleges blocked key roads including the Science Lab intersection, demanding the promulgation of an ordinance to establish Dhaka Central University.

The protesters brought out a procession from Dhaka College and blocked Science Lab road around 12:45pm.

Besides, students put up blockades at Tantibazar intersection around 11:45am and at the Technical intersection around 12:30pm, said witnesses.

Vehicular movement in these areas came to a standstill due to the demonstrations, causing massive tailbacks and serious inconvenience to commuters.

Sources said protesters also took positions in Farmgate area, extending traffic congestion up to the Elevated Expressway.

They warned that the student movement would continue if the demand is not met within the stipulated time.

Earlier on Tuesday, the protesters announced the programme, pressing a single-point demand — approval of the updated draft of the Dhaka Central University Ordinance at the Advisory Council meeting scheduled for January 15.
