The inform team of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, Gazi Group Chattogram, continue their fantastic form in the tourney as they comprehensively beat Minister Group Rajshahi by 36 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday.
Thanks to left arm openers Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das, who yet again showcased their exquisite batting with the former scoring 63 and latter 55. After being sent to bat first, Soumya’s 48-ball 63 and Liton’s 43-ball 55 propelled their team to a challenging total of 175/4.
Soumya’s innings comprised of 3 boundaries and 4 maximums. Liton’s innings included 5 boundaries and 1 maximum. Later, Chattogram’s spinner Nahidul Islam's 3 wicket-haul restricted Minister Group Rajshahi at 139/8. Man of the Match Nahidul finished the match with impressive figures of 19/3 in 4 overs.
With this win, Gazi Group Chattogram, who were league leaders before this match, solidify their position at the points table. They will finish the group stage by sitting at the top of the table, with 14 points from the 8 games they played. Ironically their counterpart, Rajshahi will now have to hope that Mushfiqur Rahim’s Beximco Dhaka get the better of Tamim Iqbal’s Fortune Barishal in the day’s next fixture, to make it to the playoffs.
Earlier, openers Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar struck fifties and Shamsur Rahman played a cameo innings at the latter part of the innings to help Chattogram post a commendable total. The duo of Soumya and Liton, who have been in phenomenal touch in the five-team tourney, enjoyed a 122-run opening stand.
Chasing 176, Rajshahi could only muster 139/8. None of their batsmen were resolute enough and they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Chattogram's Nahidul had Rajshahi cornered at the start as the right-arm spinner scalped the pivotal wickets of dangerous Rajshahi openers, inside the first six overs. Rajshahi never recovered from that bad start and they suffered their sixth defeat in the tournament.
