SMEs are the lifeline of economy: Tipu Munshi

DCCI delegation calls on Commerce Minister

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Monday laid stress on  institutional research to sustain in the international market with an access of diversified export as the economic dimension has changed a lot throughout the world. 

He also said that SMEs are the lifeline of our economy contributing about 26% to our GDP. Moreover, to be more competitive in the export market, government will support all potential sectors. 

Minister made the remarks in a view exchange meeting with the newly elected office bearers of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) as the DCCI delegation called on Minister at his office at Bangladesh Secretariat. 

The delegation, led by DCCI President Rizwan Rahman, was also attended by Senior Vice President N K A Mobin, FCS, FCA and Vice President Monowar Hossain among others.

MInister assured the Chamber President of all support from the ministry for the greater interest of our economy. 

He further requested the DCCI President to put forward necessary recommendations from the business community to the ministry for government’s consideration.  

During the discussion, DCCI President Rizwan Rahman requested to allow same fiscal and non-fiscal facilities to all export oriented sector like RMG sector keeping in mind the LDC graduation of Bangladesh. 

In the post Brexit era, government can take initiative to sign FTA with the UK, he added. The Companies Act sets the capital limit of taka 25lakh and sales transaction valued taka 1 crore to register aOne Person Company (OPC) business. 

In this regard the DCCI President requested the Minister to reconsider the clause and reduce the threshold. 

He also emphasized on formulating a comprehensive trade policy to boost export diversification. 

He further said that businesses requires extension on both moratorium and repayment period for loans under the stimulus package to minimum 1 year as most of businesses are still struggling with pandemic challenges in business. 

He believes, cooperation from Ministry of Commerce would help to expand our export and secure more investment. 

DCCI Secretary General Afsarul Arifeen and Secretary Md. Joynal Abdin were also present during this meeting.
