Police on Friday arrested a BNP leader in Sirajganj for issuing threat to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Identified as Rashedul Hasan Ranjon, a join general secretary of BNP’s Sirajganj district unit, was arrested following a video footage containing death threat to the PM.

Talking to this correspondent on Saturday evening, Additional Superintendent (Admin) of Siraganj District Police Md Hannan Miah confirmed the arrest as saying,”We are going to produce the BNP leader before the court today (Sunday) seeking a seven days remand.”

General Secretary of District Chhatra League Abdullah bin Ahmed said, Rashedul Hasan Ranjan chanted slogans in the rally organised by District BNP at Islamia Government College ground on Friday

A video footage, which has become viral in the social media, shows that BNP leader Rashedul Hasan Ranjon was chanting a slogan “fight to kill Hasina”.

In a video posted on the verified, official Facebook page of Bangladesh Awami League, Ranjon is heard shouting the slogan: “This time, the fight is to kill Sheikh Hasina and finish off Awami League.”

The video also shows senior BNP leaders on the stage along with Rashedul at a protest rally held in Sirajganj on Friday.

The post, containing the video, on AL’s verified Facebook page reads: “We condemn such acts of issuing threats from rallies, and demand exemplary punishment.”

The video has already triggered discussion on social media with many criticizing such slogans.

AL leaders and activists are taking such “death threats” seriously considering 19 attempts made on Sheikh Hasina’s life, including the heinous grenade attack in 2004 on an Awami League rally, in which around 24 leaders and activists were killed. BNP’s acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman was convicted for his involvement in planning the grenade attack.

Last year, a BNP volunteer front – Swechchhasebok Dal – leader’s similar “threat” to the PM also sparked anger on social media. In a speech, video of which went viral soon after, Abdul Qader Bhuiyan was heard publicly calling to restage “another 1975”, referring to the brutal massacre of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by a group of disgruntled army officers.
