Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury became the speaker of the parliament for the first time on 30 April, 2013. She had remained in that position

uninterruptedly since then. She was elected as a Member of Parliament from Rangpur-6 constituency in 2014 national elections.

Amid the filing of cases against politicians related to the Awami League, a case has been lodged against Shirin too.

On August 27, Shirin was accused in a murder case over the death of a jewelry worker named Muslim Uddin in Rangpur during the recent protests.

Muslim's wife Dilruba Akter lodged the case with Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court, accusing 17 people including Shirin.
