Separate bus lane under construction

The government is constructing a 20.50-km separate lane for bus from Gazipur to Shahjalal International Airport for smooth commuting of people. The project styled Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport Project, (BRT, Gazipur-Airport) 2nd Revised is now being implemented at a rapid pace, sources said. Besides, the government has been implementing a 20-year Strategic Transport Plan (STP) to resolve the traffic congestion in Dhaka City.

There will be 25 stations, six flyovers, 4.50km elevated BRT lane from Uttara to Tongi and 16km flat grade on the route, and 18-metre-long 100 articulated buses will run on the route. There will be an electronic smart card system for collecting fare. Once the project is completed, it will take only 50 minutes to travel from Gazipur to airport with the frequency of buses between 2 and 5 minutes.

Some 25,000 passengers will be able to travel from both sides of the route in an hour. The project is estimated at Tk 4268.32 crore of which Tk 2542.51 crore will come from the Asian Development Bank, and Tk 1425.51 crore from the government exchequer. The Bridge Authority will implement the project by December 2020.

The project areas are Dhaka North City Corporation, Gazipur Sadar and Tongi area. Besides, the government is also constructing 22-km BRT Line-3 having 16 stations from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Jhilmil, Keraniganj. According to the project details, the BRT Line-3 would have inter- connection facility with the under construction Gazipur-Airport BRT at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport station.

In the phase-1, the authority will implement the project from Airport to Mohakhali, phase-2 will be completed from Mohakhali to Gulistan and phase-3 will be implemented from Gulistan to Jhilmil, Keraniganj over the Buriganga River. Besides, the government has been implementing a 20-year Strategic Transport Plan (STP) to resolve the traffic congestion in Dhaka City.
