Search committee submits 10 names to President

The Search Committee tasked with suggesting 10 names to form the next Election Commission handed over the final nominations to President Abdul Hamid on Thursday.

In this regard, the six-member search committee led by Justice Obaidul Hassan, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, called on the President at his official residence Bangabhaban Thursday evening, said Mohammad Joynal Abedin, press secretary to the President.

Five other members of the committee--Justice SM Kuddus Zaman of High Court Division, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Mohammed Sohrab Hossain, former Election Commissioner Mohammed Sohul Hossain and Professor Anwara Syed Haq, who is also known to all as a prominent writer and columnist, accompanied Justice Obaidul Hassan.

Besides, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam was also present there.

The search committee at its last meeting held on Tuesday last at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge finalised the list comprising 10 names.

A source in the committee said they proposed two names for the post of CEC who do not have experience of serving in a bureaucratic post.

The names discussed for the next EC are former cabinet secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, former cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam, former secretary Habibul Awal, ex-army chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, former secretary Ujjwal Bikash Dutta, Justice (retd) Nazmun Ara Sultana, former Dhaka University VC AAMS Arefin Siddique, DU teacher Sadeka Halim, local government expert Tofail Ahmed, President of Fair Election Monitoring Alliance (FEMA) Munira Khan, economist Mansur Ahmed and former principal secretary Abdul Karim.

The sources also said the Search Committee has included a name of a male from the minority communities and another from the women community in the final list.

The Committee sources said that the president might form the EC today or tommorrow based on its recommendation, according to the source.
