Russia’s state atomic energy corporation – Rosatom looks forward for further co-operation with India in the field of Light Water Reactors (LWR).
Rosatom experts were addressing a session of the international conference titled “Future of Light Water Reactor Technology in India”, held in Mumbai recently, according to Rosatom press release.
The conference was organized by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) under the aegis of Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI).
Rosatom experts in their presentations addressed topics on further development of cooperation between Russia and India in the sphere of light water reactors, specific features of their licensing and safety requirements, safety features of VVER 1200 reactors as well as perspectives of small modular reactors development.
The conference was dedicated to the future utilization of Light Water Reactors in India to supplement existing plans of construction of heavy water pressurized reactors. During the conference participants discussed issues and possibilities of localization of light water reactor systems manufacturing within the framework of the “Make in India” program. Experts from various countries involved in designing, building and operations of light water reactors participated in the conference. Light Water Reactors use normal water instead of heavy water both as coolant and neutron moderator. Russian VVER reactors are the examples of Light Water Reactor.
Rosatom is presently supporting implementation of India’s nuclear energy programme as the technical consultant and main equipment supplier for the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu.
In addition, Rosatom is being constructed Bangladesh’s first Nuclear Power Plant in Rooppur of Pabna district. The Power Plant will have two units, each of 1200 MW capacity, with latest generation 3+ VVER 1200 reactor.
It is high on the Bangladesh government’s agenda, all the way up to the Prime Minister’s Office. The government believes that the first unit will be started its generation by 2023 and the second unit will be launched by 2024..
