In a noteworthy leap towards sustainable practices, Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) industry has celebrated the certification of 24 new factories under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) programme in 2023.

LEED, a globally recognized green building rating system, signifies a commitment to environmental responsibility and energy efficiency. This achievement underscores Bangladesh's dedication to green initiatives in the garments sector, bringing the total number of LEED-certified green factories in the country to 206.

According to BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel, 76 of these factories achieved the highest platinum rating, while 116 received a gold rating, showcasing a robust commitment to sustainability within the industry. Of the 24 newly certified factories, 16 were awarded the prestigious platinum rating, and the remaining 8 attained a gold rating. Notable performers in 2023 included S. M. Sourcing and Green Textiles Limited Unit 4, with high scores of 106 and 104 points, respectively.

Other noteworthy contributors include Integra Dresses, Knit Asia Limited, Lida Textile & Dyeing Limited, and Liz Fashion Industry Limited.

Bangladesh's leadership in the global sustainable fashion movement is highlighted by the fact that 54 out of the 100 LEED-certified green factories worldwide are located in the country.

BGMEA data reveals that 9 of the top 10 and 18 of the top 20 LEED-certified factories globally are also situated in Bangladesh.

Director Mohiuddin Rubel sees this accomplishment as a potential catalyst for increased investment and partnerships in the Bangladesh RMG industry.

The geographic distribution of certifications within Bangladesh showcases a nationwide commitment to LEED principles in the RMG industry. Gazipur leads with 15 certified factories, followed by Dhaka (4), Chattogram (3), and Mymensingh (2).

Over 500 Bangladeshi factories are currently in the process of obtaining LEED certification, indicating a sustained commitment to green practices in the country's RMG industry. This proactive approach aligns with global environmental goals and positions Bangladesh as a forward-thinking leader in green manufacturing.

The significant increase in LEED-certified green factories in 2023 emphasizes the industry's dedication to sustainable fashion, setting a benchmark for environmental stewardship and solidifying Bangladesh's role in the global push for more sustainable manufacturing practices.
