The High Court (HC) on Monday ordered Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to remove BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman's statements from social media sites like Facebook and YouTube.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after holding hearing on a supplemental petition filed over a rule issued against broadcasting Tarique's statements in media.

The court passed the order amid chaotic environment created by the pro-BNP lawyers inside the courtroom. "The order is passed. If you feel aggrieved, you can go to the Appellate Division," the court said.

At one stage, the two judges left the courtroom for their chambers. The court resumed their regular activities again at around 2.30 pm.

Advocates Qamrul Islam, Sanzida Khanom and Nasrin Siddiqa Lina filed a writ, pleading for court's directive to remove the statements of Tarique, a fugitive convict, from social media.

Advocate Nasrin Siddiqa Lina on January 6, 2015, filed the initial writ, pleading for court's instructions to take necessary measures not to publish, broadcast, screen and reproduce any statement of Tarique Rahman in any newspaper, electronic media, social media or any other electronic device or media, as he is a fugitive convict.

The High Court on January 7, 2015, issued the interim rule over banning the publication and broadcasting of Tarique Rahman's statements in media.
