A views-exchange meeting was held between Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali and the REHAB Chattogram Regional Committee, where various issues related to the housing sector, harassment of developers, and dispute resolution were discussed.
The meeting took place last Tuesday at the CMP Headquarters in Lal Dighi area. The REHAB delegation was led by REHAB Vice President and Chairman of the Chattogram Regional Committee, Mohammad Morshedul Hasan.
During the meeting, REHAB proposed forming a joint committee comprising representatives from REHAB and the police to resolve disputes involving REHAB members, landowners, and apartment buyers. The REHAB Vice President said that under Section 36(1) of the Real Estate Development and Management Act 2010, disputes must first go through an amicable settlement process. He requested that complaints related to such disputes be referred to REHAB’s Mediation and Customer Care Committee before being formally accepted at police stations.
REHAB Director and Co-Chairman-1 of the Chattogram Regional Committee, Sarista Binte Noor, said that many non-REHAB developers and individuals in Chattogram are conducting real estate business and constructing buildings without following government rules and regulations. She noted that fraudulent activities by such entities often create a negative impression on REHAB, damaging the organization’s reputation. She sought police cooperation in this regard and urged authorities to ensure that REHAB members are not subjected to unnecessary harassment at police stations. She also proposed the formation of a joint monitoring cell between CMP and REHAB.
REHAB Director and Co-Chairman-2 of the Chattogram Regional Committee, ASM Abdul Gaffar Miajy, said that developers often face harassment from landowners and influential groups while implementing projects. Such incidents cause financial losses and damage the social image of developer companies, making administrative support essential.
Speaking at the meeting, CMP Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali praised REHAB’s contribution to addressing the country’s housing crisis and its social activities. He assured the REHAB representatives that instructions would be given to all police stations to address the problems of REHAB members on a priority basis. He also said a dedicated CMP official would be assigned to coordinate and help resolve REHAB-related issues. At the same time, he urged developers to construct buildings in compliance with the law and within the stipulated timeframe.
Among others present at the meeting were CMP Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Md. Ferdous Ali Chowdhury and REHAB Chattogram Regional Committee members Hrishikesh Chowdhury, Syed Irfanul Alam, Nur Mohammad, and Ashish Roy Chowdhury.
