Reg, deposit for e-firms within 2 months a must

The government has instructed the country's e-commerce companies to register with the commerce ministry and keep a deposit to the central bank within next two months. 

The directive was given at a cabinet meeting held on Thursday. 

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said, "We have discussed about Evaly and other e-commerce companies in the meeting. The Ministry of Commerce has taken a decision in this regard. In the next two months, those who will be involved in e-commerce business will have to register."

"At the same time they have to keep a deposit in Bangladesh Bank, so that if anything untoward happens, everyone can be paid from that deposit,” he added.

He also said that Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit and other concerned intelligence agencies have been instructed to monitor the situation to prevent irregularities. 

The meeting has also decided to go for extensive campaigns. Extensive publicity to make people understand that the government now has listed e-commerce companies. These institutions are authorized by the government to do business on digital platforms. 

In this regard the cabinet secretary said, "We have instructed our FIOs and other intelligence agencies to monitor digital platforms. They will also check the movement of these platforms so that no one can do anything wrong." 

Consumers have also been asked not to deal with anyone outside the list. If anyone conducts anything it will be their own responsibility.
