Bangladesh on Tuesday recorded the highest number of new Covid-19 cases in a day since the beginning of the pandemic in March last year.

This comes amid strict lockdown being enforced across Bangladesh since July 1. The death toll also crossed the hundred-mark for the 10th consecutive day.

The Directorate General of Health Services in its daily bulletin recorded 11,525 new cases of Covid-19 and 163 deaths in the last 24 hours till 8am on Tuesday.

This is the first time Bangladesh reported over 10,000 daily cases. The number of samples tested during the period was also highest in a day so far.

Some 36,631 samples were tested across the country. Of them, 31.46 percent tested positive which is the highest in several months.

Earlier on Monday the government registered 9,964 positive cases, the second single-day highest.

The death toll also remained high with 163 more deaths recorded in 24 hours.

With the latest additions, the number of total cases rose to 9,66,406 and the death toll to 15,392.

The death rate, however, remained unchanged at 1.59 percent.

The death rate is going up outside Dhaka as the ‘delta’ variant of coronavirus is spreading across the country.

The Khulna division accounted for the highest number of deceased with 46 people died of Covid-19 during the 24 hour period. Dhaka came second in terms of division-wise deaths with 45 deaths.

Chattogram and Rajshahi reported 24 deaths each while 11 more died in Rangpur.

Besides, six people died in Barishal, five in Mymensingh and two in Sylhet divisions.

Doctors blamed late reporting of the Covid-19 symptoms as aggravating the conditions of the rural people who are mostly unaware of using masks or maintaining physical distance. People tend to ignore fever, cough as normal flu.

Among the latest victims, 98 were men, and 65 were women.

The recovery count also rose to 8,44,515 after another 5,433 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the past one day.

The health directorate statistics showed that of the people infected from the beginning 87.39 percent recovered.

The government has extended the ongoing lockdown till midnight of July 14 as the cases and deaths continued to rise sharply in the past several days.
