Rain triggers waterlogging in city

Published : 31 May 2025 03:35 PM

Multiple areas of Dhaka city, including major thoroughfares, experienced severe waterlogging following intermittent rainfall since Thursday morning, significantly disrupting daily life.

Pedestrians were seen wading through knee-deep water in several parts of the city, while traffic movement slowed to a crawl due to waterlogged streets and frequent vehicle breakdowns. The rainfall, triggered by an active monsoon system, led to widespread flooding, particularly on Thursday and Friday, inundating key roads and residential areas.

Many neighborhoods, including Dhanmondi, Rokeya Sarani, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Senpara Parbata, Merul Badda, Gulshan, Bijoy Sarani, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Arambagh, Motijheel, Sukrabad, Kalabagan, Gulistan, Manik Mia Avenue, and parts of Old Dhaka, were submerged under ankle- to knee-deep water. Lanes and by-lanes across the city were also affected.

Commuters faced immense difficulty due to the flooded roads and prolonged traffic congestion. People who ventured out for work on Friday found themselves stranded or forced to navigate waterlogged streets.

Waterlogging has become a recurring problem during the monsoon season in Dhaka. Despite repeated assurances from authorities, including the two city corporations and Dhaka WASA, a lasting solution remains elusive. Residents have long expressed frustration over the lack of coordinated action, often citing a blame game between various government agencies.

To address the crisis, a control room has been set up at the Directorate of Public Health Engineering in Kakrail to provide emergency support. The facility will serve residents of both Dhaka North and South City Corporations.

For assistance, residents can contact:

Faruk Hasan Md. Al Masud, Supervising Engineer, Dhaka North City Corporation: 0173982486

Dr. Mohammad Shafiullah Siddique Bhuiyan, Supervising Engineer, Dhaka South City Corporation: 01968468367

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported that the deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal has started weakening after making landfall. However, under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions.

BMD forecasts continued rain in Dhaka throughout Friday and Saturday, with the potential for further rainfall across Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Dhaka divisions due to active monsoon winds.
