Train derails in Cumilla

Mymensingh-bound train ‘Bijoy Express’ from Chattogram derailed at Nangalkot in Cumilla on Sunday, snapping rail communication between Chattogram and the reaming parts of the country.

The derailment of the train took place in Tejer Bazar area under Dhalua Union in Nangalkot Upazila around 2:00pm. 

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Nangalkot police station, Debashish Chowdhury confirmed the matter, saying nine coaches of the train has been derailed. 

General Manager (East) of Bangladesh Railway Mohammad Nazmul Islam said the incident took place at Nangalkot, 5 km from Hasanpur.  “We are sending relief train to pull the derailed coaches.  

No casualties, however, were reported in the accident.

 Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Laksam Railway Police Station Murad Ullah Bahar said train movement on the up-line has remained suspended since the incident.  

Railway sources said Akhaura Loco Sed relief train, Pahartali Locoshed Hydraulic Toolvan and Laksam Locoshed relief train are departing from Chittagong.  There will be some disruption of train schedule on Dhaka-Chittagong, Chittagong-Sylhet, Chittagong-Chandpur and Dhaka-Cox's Bazar route.

Chittagong station manager Moniruzzaman said rail communication with Chittagong has remain snapped.  Train movement will resume after the rescue operation is over.
