RAB arrests accused Jitu

Murder of Savar teacher

After four days of the incident, the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Wednesday arrested Ashraful Islam Jitu who allegedly killed college teacher Utpal Kumar Sarker with a cricket stump in Ashulia of Savar.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, ASP Imran Khan of RAB headquarters (Legal and Media wing) on Wednesday evening confirmed it.

He said, we arrested Jitu from Sripur Upazila of Gazipur district on Wednesday.

Details would be disclosed at a press conference to be held on Thursday, he further said. 

A Dhaka Court on Wednesday placed Ujjal Islam, father of Ashraful Islam Jitu who allegedly killed college teacher Utpal Kumar Sarker with a cricket stump in Ashulia of Savar, on a five-day remand.

However, investigation officer of the case, sought for a ten days’ remand for interrogating him in police custody.

Judge Sheikh Mujahidul Islam granted the remand after a hearing in the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Savar Police arrested Ujjal Islam  from Kushtia's Kumarkhali area on Tuesday night.

Utpal, son of late Ajit Sarkar of Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj, breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the Savar Enam Medical College and Hospital at 5:15am on Monday.

Ujjal is a resident of Chitrashail area of Ashulia, said SM Kamruzzaman Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia police station.

When asked if the father is directly involved in the killing of the teacher, the OC said, "The matter is being investigated. Efforts are underway to catch the main culprit, Jitu."

Utpal was a lecturer in the political science department and chairman of the disciplinary committee at Hazi Yunus Ali School and College in Chitrasail area of Ashulia for some 10 years.

Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Maruf Hossain Sardar told that the murder of Utpal Kumar Sarkar is being investigated seriously.

He made the remarks while visiting Haji Yunus Ali College in Chitrashail area of Ashulia on Wednesday.

Responding to a question over the actual age of the killer, Maruf Hossain Sardar said that it was not important what was shown in the case. If necessary, we shall bring a medical examination. 

He added that there was nothing slow in the investigation. Police have taken action since the incident. 

“Several of our teams are conducting operations in different places including Manikganj and Kushtia”, he stated.
