The Election Commission (EC) authorities on Wednesday announced the schedule for the 22nd presidential election of Bangladesh as saying that the election will be held on February19 from 2pm to 5pm.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal announced the election schedule at a press conference held at the EC building in the capital’s Agargaon.
The CEC was addressing the press following a meeting of the commission regarding the presidential election.
The date for submitting nomination papers is February12 (10:00am to -4:00pm) and those will be reviewed on February13.
The commission has set February14 (till 4:00pm) as the final date for withdrawing nominations.
Earlier on Tuesday, as per the law, CEC Kazi Habibul Awal met with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury to have a discussion over the polls.
Article 123 (1) of the Constitution states that if the post of president becomes vacant due to expiry of the term, an election shall be held to fill the vacant post within 60 to 90 days before the term expires.
The president is elected by the votes of the members of parliament. As the Awami League has an absolute majority in the parliament, their candidate will certainly become president.
The last presidential election was scheduled on January25, 2018 and the election date was February 18, but since there was only one candidate, Md Abdul Hamid was elected president for the second term on February 6. His term will end on April 23.
This time, the countdown for the presidential election started on January 23. The president should be elected by February 23.
