Police have yet to uncover the motive behind the murder of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar despite the arrest of at least nine individuals on their suspected involvement in the murder.
Officials of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) came up with the remark on Thursday.
During a media briefing at the DMP Media Centre in Dhaka, DB chief Harun-or-Rashid on Thursday said. "So far, nine people have been arrested in connection with the murder of MP Azim. Of them, seven were directly involved. The others are cohorts who helped with planning,"
He said two of the accused have been arrested by the Indian Police, while the other seven have been captured by the Bangladesh Police.
However, it is yet to be ascertained exactly why the MP was murdered, said Harun, also Additional Commissioner of DMP, in response to a question from a
journalist. "We can't say what was the motive behind the murder just yet. Finance, business and political reasons are being investigated," said the DB chief.
Earlier on Wednesday, the DB police arrested two more people- Mostafizur Rahman Fakir and Faisal Ali Saji - from a remote hilly area of Khagrachari's Patal Kali Mandir over the murder of MP Azim.
Harun said the DB will seek a 10-day remand for the arrestees.
Anwarul Azim Anar, a lawmaker from the ruling Awami League, crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for treatment on May 12. He stayed at his friend Gopal Biswas’s home in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
The following day, he left to see a doctor at around noon and was expected to return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone to Biswas said that he had gone to Delhi instead and would call if necessary.
Since then, he could not be reached by phone. Eventually, the Bangladesh government confirmed his death on May 22, citing Indian police.
