‘People with disabilities no burden on society’’

Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed has said that people with disabilities are not a burden to the society; they can become an asset with proper care.

He made the statement while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organized by the Ministry of Social Welfare on a virtual platform on Friday on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the National Disabled Day. 

Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare Mahfuza Akhter presided over the discussion held from the conference room of the National Foundation for Development of the Disabled Persons in Mirpur.

State Minister for Social Welfare Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Social Welfare Rashed Khan Menon and Director General of the Department of Social Services Sheikh Rafiqul Islam also spoke during this time, along with others.

The minister said that the programs undertaken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to improve the living standards of the people with disabilities must be successfully implemented. 

“With proper training and cooperation, people with disabilities will be able to contribute to the development of the country by becoming an asset,” he said. 

He called on all those interested in working with disabilities, including development partners and non-governmental organizations, to work with the government to build a disability-friendly country.

State Minister for Social Welfare Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru said that normal life of the persons with disabilities should be ensured through the successful implementation of the programs adopted for them.

Speaking as the special guest at the meeting, Rashed Khan Menon said that the ongoing work for the persons with disabilities needs to be taken forward. 

He also stressed on the importance of proper implementation of disability laws and regulations.
