The number of diarrheal cases in the capital has started decreasing and the number of patients admitted to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) also declined.

The number of patients admitted to the hospital daily has come down to less than a thousand, which was close to 1500 even four days ago.

However, the number of children suffering from diarrhea had increased in the last two days, according to the doctors on duty.

According to hospital data, about 48,000 diarrhea and cholera patients were treated at icddr,b from March 1 to April 15.

Although the number of patients has been on the rise since March, the number of patients admitted to the hospital has been declining since April 8.

Dr Shoaib bin Islam, Assistant Scientist of icddr,b said that the number of diarrhea patients has come down a little.

“After almost a month, the number of daily hospital admissions has dropped to less than a thousand. As many as 400 diarrhea patients were admitted to the hospital till 1 pm on Saturday,” he said.

He also said that at the end of the day, like the previous day, the total number of patients may increase to 900.

Noting that the number of pediatric patients with diarrhea has increased in the last two days, he said that out of the total patients coming to icddr,b, the previous admission rate of children was 30 percent.

“After observing the situation for two days, it seems that the rate of child patients has increased to 40 percent. Most of them are coming with severe dehydration, which is a risk factor,” he added.

According to the statistics of the Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS), in March, 170,237 people were treated in the hospitals across the country for diarrhea. Of them, 36,912 people were from the capital.
