No threat over Pahela Baishakh celebration: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Monday said there is no specific militant threats centring the celebration of Pahela Baishakh, Bengali New Year.

He made this remark while talking to the media after inspecting security measures at Bashundhara City Shopping Complex in capital Dhaka.

He however said, "We shall take highest security measures for Mangal Shobhajatra".

Senior police officials including Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq were also present there.

The police chief said police took security measures at all markets and shopping malls and people are shopping without any fear.

He further said all operational units are working their level best to ensure security.

The IGP said that citizens can avail police escort when carrying large sums of money.

Responding to another question, he told that the traffic system was also strengthened for easy movement in the market area.

The IGP said that even the DMP Commissioner had Iftar with the forces on duty on the roads. Additional commissioners are also on duty on the road till Iftar to reduce traffic congestion. However, due to some real problems, we may not be able to provide the level of service expected by the people despite our sincerity and goodwill.

The police chief said that uniform police and DB special operations are ongoing to prevent robbery in Dhaka city.
