Education Minister Dipu Moni on Tuesday said there is no scope to defer the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams scheduled to start on August 17.
The minister said this during a press briefing after a national monitoring and disciplinary committee meeting at International Mother Language Institute.
The announcement came when a section of students has been staging demonstrations in Dhaka and some other parts of the country for deferment of HSC exams.
A total of 13,59,342 students are expected to take part in this year's HSC and equivalent exams. Of the candidates, 6.88 lakh are boys and 6.70 lakh are girls.
The number of examinees for this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams has increased by 155,935 compared to last year. Last year there were 12 lakh 3 thousand 407 candidates. Students will take the HSC exams at 2,658 centres across the country.
Dipu Moni said all coaching centres would remain closed from August 14 to September 25 due to the upcoming HSC exams.
However, the examination for the Information and Communication Technology will be conducted on 75 marks instead of 100 and the exams will be held on a curtailed syllabus but in full duration and with full marks.
Dipu Moni also said the decision to decrease the marks for this subject was made to make it easier for students. She urged protesting students to go home and return to their studies. However, some of the examinees and their guardians demand the deferral of HSC exams.
They said, there is an outbreak of dengue. There are water logging-related problems due to heavy rainfall in many parts of the country. For these reasons, many of the students cannot prepare themselves properly.
