The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has set a target to achieve 20 percent of the total GDP by 2030, its Chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said on Wednesday. “I’m seeking cooperation from all to achieve our target. In this regard we all will have to work together,” he said at the Officers' Club in the city.
He was speaking at a function on 21 companies under the Large Income Tax Unit (LTU) which handed over the pay order to the NBR. “Currently, the tax contribution to total GDP is 10 to 11 percent. We want to increase this to 15 percent by 2025,’ he said. The NBR chairman said, capable people should pay the income tax for development of the nation as it is a moral duty for them.
“The country has developed to use internal resources. The country’s GDP growth is now almost 8 percent. We will keep up this growth by increasing tax revenues,” he said. Most of the people consider paying income tax at the fair as it is a reliable place, he added. He informed people of ensuring good environment in the NBR office, which helped taxpayers to take harassment-free tax services like in the fair.
Mosharraf said, if anyone wants to harass the taxpayer in this case, appropriate action will be taken against him. On the occasion, a total of 21 companies including various banks and insurance companies handed over pay order worth Tk 293 crore to the NBR chairman. The Fairs remained open from 9:00am to 8pm on Wednesday. Although the income tax fair ended on Wednesday, income tax return can be submitted in the tax zone offices up to November 30.
