A mugger stabbed five policemen indiscriminately on Wednesday at the entrance of Bangshal Police Station in the capital, leaving one critically injured.
Inspector (Investigation) Mir Rezaul Karim of Bangshal Police Station confirmed it on Thursday.
Among them, the critically injured policeman underwent surgical operation in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
He was identified as constable Nazrul Islam, who received serious stab injuries in his abdomen.
The other injured policemen were identified as sub-inspector (SI) Sumon Chandra, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Tajul Islam, constables Sajib, Rafiqul and Nazrul Islam.
The incident occurred at about 11:30pm in front of the Bangshal Police Station entrance. All the five injured policemen work at Bangshal Police Station. Four of them are now taking rest after receiving primary treatment while constable Nazrul Islam is now being given treatment at the DMCH.
According to Inspector (Investigation) Mir Rezaul Karim, two muggers -- Emon, 22, and Jewel, 23 -- were brought to the police station after they were detained in the city's Fulbaria area on Wednesday night. All on a sudden, at the entrance of the police station, Emon attacked five policemen with a knife and stabbed them indiscriminately.
They all were brought to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Constable Nazrul is currently battling for his life.
Since Nazrul Islam came under attack first, he received major injuries deep inside his abdomen. He is being given treatment at the DMCH. The others were injured while they came forward to protect Nazrul and resist the muggers, Inspector Mir Rezaul Karim added.
Nazrul underwent a surgical operation at the DMCH on Thursday morning. The other policemen who were injured are now under treatment at the hospital.
We are taking necessary legal steps against the muggers, he further said.
