Moudud Ahmed passes away

BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed has passed away at the age of 81. He breathed his last at about 6:30 PM (Bangladesh Time) at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on Tuesday (March 16).

He left behind his wife Hasna Jasimuddin Moudud, a daughter of Poet Jasimuddin, and a host of well-wishers to mourn his death.

Moudud Ahmed had been suffering from old-age complications for some months. The veteran leader was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on December 29 as his haemoglobin level dropped. He was discharged from the hospital on January 20. He was again taken to the hospital on January 21.

On February 1, he was admitted to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital for better treatment. He was shifted to ICU of the hospital on March 9 following the deterioration of his condition.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep shock at the death of his party’s leader. He prayed for salvation of departed soul of the politician.  

The party’s other senior leaders, including Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Jamiruddin Sarker, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, also expressed deep shock. Leaders of the BNP-led 20-party alliance also expressed their deep shock at the death of the veteran politician. Among them, Dr Col (retd) Oli Ahmed of LDP, Mostafa Jamal Haider of Jatiya Party, Maj Gen (retd) Syed Mohammad Ibrahim Birpratik of Bangladesh Kalyan Party, Dr Fariduzzaman Farhad of NPP and Maulana Abdur Rakib of Islami Oikya Jote. 

Chairman of Bangladesh NAP Jebel Rahman Ghaani and Secretary General M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan also expressed deep shock at the death of the BNP leader. 

Born on May 24 in 1940 in Noakhali, Moudud Ahmed held numerous political offices during his political life. He is one of the founding members of the BNP. He joined Jatiya Party in 1985 and served as Prime Minister and Vice President in Ershad’s government. He returned to the BNP in 1996 and was made Law Minister in Khaleda Zia’s government in 2001. He also served as minister in Zia’s government. 

Moudud Ahmed was elected MP total five times from Noakhali-1 and Noakhali-5 constituencies. He served as first postmaster general of Bangladesh after the independence. He was a fellow at Heidelberg University in Germany and a visiting fellow at Harvard University in the United States and author of several books.
