The government is going to undertake a project to rehabilitate Tangan Barrage, Buri Dam and Bhulli Dam irrigation projects in Thakurgaon district.

The mega project aims at conservation of the river banks as well as building integrated water control infrastructure.

If it is implemented, irrigation projects will be rehabilitated and 6,000 hectares of land will be brought under irrigation by constructing integrated water control structures.

Crop density can be increased by 15 percent and additional food grains of about 15,717 metric tonnes can be produced annually.

Stakeholders hope that it will be possible to tackle the effects of climate change as a whole, including increase in fish production and protecting biodiversity.

Zakir Hossain Akanda, a former member of the Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Institutions Department of the Planning Commission, in charge of the project, said the total cost of the project is estimated at Tk 298.36 crore.

By constructing and rehabilitating the irrigation canals and constructing irrigation structures, it will be possible to increase the  area of irrigation and the productivity including crop density by providing uninterrupted irrigation water, he mentioned.

Planning Commission sources said a meeting of the Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) was held on December 9 last year after receiving the project proposal.

The Development Project Proposal (DPP) has been restructured by implementing the recommendations given at the meeting, they said.

As a result, it will be presented at any meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).

If approved, the project will be implemented by the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) within the period of June 2023.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, if the irrigation canals are repaired, the irrigated area will be increased from 3,000 hectares to about 7,000 hectares.

In addition, if integrated water control infrastructure is constructed to the south of Tangan Bridge in Thakurgaon district town, about 2,000 hectares of land can be turned into a fish sanctuary with irrigation facilities.
