Considering the huge demand of the people of the country for vaccination, the mass vaccination programme has been extended for two more days, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque.
Administration of first, second and booster doses of vaccine will also continue, he added.
The Minister made the remarks at a virtual press conference on doing the needful after the mass vaccine campaign on Saturday afternoon.
He said, “Bangladesh is probably the only country in the world to have given one crore vaccines in a day. Earlier, we have been able to administer 80 lakh doses of vaccines in a day. Today (Saturday) we are overwhelmed to see the influx of people in all the vaccination centers of the country. We hope that the number of vaccines received today will exceed one million doses.”
He further said that Bangladesh has risen to the 10th position among 200 countries in the world as the people of the country have come forward to get vaccinated.
“As the country has succeeded in vaccination, Bangladesh's GDP is now six-plus, whereas many countries have gone into minus,” he added.
He further mentioned that so far 11 crore people have received the first dose of vaccine and if it reaches one crore today, a total of 12 crores first dose vaccination will be completed.
“About 95 percent of our target will be achieved through this. Administering one crore doses of vaccine in a day is a great achievement of the country,” he said.
The Health Minister thanked all the concerned people including hundreds of thousands of health workers who have worked in the field level.
Senior Secretary of the Health Services Division Lokman Hossain Miah, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr ABM Khurshid Alam, Additional Director General (ADG) of DGHS Prof Dr Ahmedul Kabir and other officials also joined the briefing virtually.
