Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will pay an official visit to Bangladesh on Thursday.

During the one-day visit, he will call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and hold discussions with Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen.

“The forthcoming visit of EAM to Bangladesh may be seen in the context of frequent bilateral high-level visits and exchanges particularly as both sides commemorate fifty years of the establishment of diplomatic ties,” said the Indian external affairs ministry.

The last visit by the Indian external affairs minister to Bangladesh was in March 2021.

Dr Momen earlier on Tuesday said his Indian counterpart might bring “good news”.

“....we’re yet to know what that news exactly is,” he told reporters.

The Indian external affairs minister will be coming with the formal invitation for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on behalf of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an impending visit to New Delhi.

The visit may take place at the end of June or first week of July.

Earlier, Modi, at the invitation of Hasina, paid a state visit to Bangladesh from 26 to 27 March 2021 to join the celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of the Independence of Bangladesh, the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 50 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh.

At the invitation of President Abdul Hamid, Indian President Ram Nath Kovind also paid a state visit to Bangladesh from December 15 to 17 last year to attend the 50th Victory Day celebrations as the guest of honour, despite the pandemic.
