Bangladesh and India relationship is based on common history, language, secularism and several other commonalities, Indian High Commissioner Vikram K Doraiswami said on Sunday as he inaugurated a library at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).

The library, built with the support of the High Commission of India, is named after the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The envoy unveiled the plaque and cut ribbon to open the library at the DRU building. After the inauguration he visited the library and attended a discussion.

DRU President Nazrul Islam Mithu, General Secretary Nurul Islam Hasib, and IT and Training Secretary Kamal Mosharef who will oversee the library, were present, among others.  The envoy said the High Commission was “very pleased to have supported this initiative”.

He said education and quality reading is an essential element in the journey of every individual and this is particularly pertinent for a journalist who remains an invaluable link in defining the social fabric in the society.

“I am confident that this library will go a long way in revitalising this bridge of knowledge and will remain an important element in further strengthening our ties with our media friends in Bangladesh.”

Last year, India and Bangladesh commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the Liberation War and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.

“When it comes to Bangladesh, our relationship is based on history, language, secularism and several other commonalities.

Our unique friendship is forged in the Liberation War of Bangladesh,” said the envoy.

General Secretary Hasib said the library was named after Kazi Nazrul as “he is our national poet, secular poet, and he is respected by both sides of the border.”

“Nazrul was also a journalist. We know his bi-weekly Dhumketu magazine. Through literature, journalism, and political activism, Nazrul fought against foreign rule, communalism, fundamentalism, exploitation,” he said.

Inside the library, he said, there is a stage which will be used for select types of programmes suitable with the library ambiance.

The DRU is the largest association of reporters in Bangladesh with around 1,900 members.  It is a united platform of reporters working in different print, electronic and online media. Representatives of foreign media outlets in Bangladesh are also its members.

The library will be equipped with academic as well as reference books for journalists, newspapers and magazines, classics, history, literary and many other varieties of books useful for reporters.
