The Indian Ministry of Culture has announced a two-day elaborate programme beginning from today to observe the International Mother Language Day in a befitting manner aimed at promoting multilingualism.
The theme of this year’s International Mother Language Day has been chosen as “Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities”, according to a statement issued here by the Indian Ministry of Culture.
The ministry in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) and UNESCO New Delhi Cluster Office will organise the two-day programme in physical and virtual format.
Culture Secretary Govind Mohan will present a key-note speech in the event followed by the address of Eric Falt, Director of UNESCO Cluster Office, New Delhi and renowned lyricist and poet Prasoon Joshi.
The programes also included poetry recitation in mother tongue, Group Song and Dance in different languages while a book titled ‘Tribal and Indigenous Languages of India’ written by Prof. Ramesh C Gaur, Dean IGNCA, will be launched at the function, the statement said.
International Mother Language Day is observed worldwide on 21st February every year to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism.
The idea to celebrate the International Mother Language Day first came from Bangladesh, the statement said adding the UNESCO general assembly later decided to celebrate February 21 as International Mother Language Day in 2000.
The programmes will also be followed by an interaction session among the group of writers, thinkers, humanitarians, politicians, journalists and experts on one stage. A cultural function will also be held marking the occasion.
