The India’s External Affairs Ministry has confirmed the Bangladesh visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the birth centenary celebration of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. During the weekly briefing on Thursday, spokesperson of the ministry Raveesh Kumar said Modi will be visiting Bangladesh to take part in the celebration on March 17.

He said the visit will also have bilateral components. He, however, did not reveal further details. Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina invited Modi to join the inauguration of the yearlong celebration in Dhaka. Modi accepted that invitation. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla recently visited Bangladesh as part of the preparations of the visit.

But Modi recently cancelled his few programmes including Brussels visit due to coronavirus emergency. Bangladesh is so far coronavirus free. But a group of hardliners are protesting against his visit due to ongoing movement in India over the citizenship amendment act which is an ‘internal’ issue of India. Shringla, during his visit, reiterated that there is no direct or indirect impact to Bangladesh.
