Homes, lands for 9 lakh poor families

PM’s gift as part of celebrating Mujib Borsho

About nine lakh poor families, who have no land and house, of the country are expected to be given homes as gift from the Prime Minister on the occasion of Mujib Borsho, said sources in the government.

According to sources, each of these destitute people and poor families would be given a tin-shed semi-concrete homes along with two decimals of land.

Sources also said, as part of the initiatives, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to hand over 66,000 homes to 66,000 of the families this month. The rest of the remaining over eight lakh families would get their homes within this year in phases.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Dr Enamur Rahman said, “As per the will of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, not a single person or family in the country will remain homeless.”

He said “A list of 8,85,622 families, who have no house and land, has already been prepared and homes for all of the enlisted families will be built for them within the ‘Mujib Borsho’.”

“About 66,000 homes for 66,000 families, who are enlisted in the ‘List-Ka’ are almost ready. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to hand over those 66,000 homes to 66,000 families on January 20,” said the State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief.

The state minister also said that each of these families are getting the homes as per the dream of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as well as of his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Officials concerned said that the housing project is being implemented jointly by the Asrayan-2 Project, Guchhagram, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. Local District Council and administration, Upazila administration and local lawmakers are also involved with the implementation of the projects.

The official sources also said that as per the official statistics, there are 2,93,361 families in the country who have neither a home nor any land while there are 5,92,261 families who have lands but no houses. The government will arrange houses or homes for all of these 8,85,622 families at free of costs.

The sources said, Tk 1.71 lakh would be spent for the construction of each house on a piece of two decimals of land. Each of the houses will be built having two living rooms and an attached toilet.

On the first phase, the officials said, on priority basis 66,000 families are getting homes. They are mainly widows, helpless and elderly people. Homes for them are almost ready and they would be handed over these homes by this month. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the handover programme. 

Ashrayan Prokalpa Director Mohammad Mahbub Hossain said that in the first phase, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over houses to about 66,000 families this month. The construction of one lakh more houses are expected to be completed within the Mujib Borsho.

Officials concerned said the government will provide houses to nine lakh families in phases. Apart from houses, the government is also taking various income-generating programmes to improve the living standards of these landless, homeless widows, helpless, elderly, destitute and disabled people.
