Convicted ruling Awami-League (AL) parliamentarian Haji Salim was shifted and admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Monday morning from the central prison in Keraniganj.

Talking to the journalist BSMMU director brigadier general Md Nazrul Islam Khan confirmed Haji’s admission. Haji Salim was hospitalized only a day after he surrendered before a court in a graft case.

According to the sources in BSMMU, Haji Salim was admitted to BSMMU on Monday at 9:00am.

The ruling party leader is suffering from heart disease and undergoing treatment in hospital under the supervision of the heart specialist.

Keraniganj central prison jailer Md Mahbubul Islam also claimed that Haji Salim is suffering from several health complexities, including heart disease. As per the direction of the court  for ensuring his proper treatment, he was shifted to BSMMU  on Monday at 9:00am in an ambulance.

According to jailer  Mahbubul Islam Haji Salim is given first-class division facility in jail. He had dinner in central prison yesterday, Sunday night. The meal menu included rice, fish and meat.

Earlier on Sunday, a  Dhaka court had sent Haji Salim to jail in a graft case rejecting his bail petition.

Haji Salim, who was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, went to Bangkok for treatment purpose on May 2 and returned home on May 5 that sparked huge controversy.

On February 10, the full text of the High Court’s verdict was published upholding his 10-year imprisonment.

On March 9 last year, HC bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq  upheld the lower court order sentencing to 10 years jail after hearing a petition by the ACC.

At the same time, the Dhaka-7 MP was acquitted of a three-year jail term in the same case filed by the ACC for concealing wealth information.

In 2007, the ACC filed the case against Salim. On April 27, 2008, a Dhaka court jailed him for 13 years and fined Tk 20 lakh.
