The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) on Wednesday urged the government to extend the timeframe for industrial and commercial loans rescheduling till December 31 to keep operational the private sector and the economic activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The country’s apex trade body also sought broader cooperation from the central bank to ensure further development of the micro and cottage industries.

A delegation of the FBCCI, led by its President Md Jashim Uddin, came up with such demands when they met Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir at his office on Wednesday.

Speaking at the meeting, Jashim said like elsewhere of the world, the economic activities as well as the trade and commerce in the country are being impacted due to the pandemic.

He said the loan borrowers across the globe are losing their loan repayment capacities while they are also finding it difficult to keep operational their businesses. “So, under this COVID-19 situation, we demand for extending the loan rescheduling timeframe till December 31,” he added.According to the existing timeframe, the businesses will be able to reschedule their loans till August 31.
