Govt to procure LNG from Singapore

The government has greenlit the acquisition of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes from companies based in Singapore, amounting to a total cost of Tk 933 crore, 94 lakh, 6 thousand, 876.

Chaired by Law Minister Anisul Huq, the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement convened on Thursday at the Secretariat's Cabinet Division conference room, endorsing the proposal.

Following deliberations, Mahmudul Hossain Khan, Secretary of Coordination and Reform at the Cabinet Division, briefed reporters on the outcomes. Under the 'Increasing Rapid Supply of Electricity and Energy (Special Provisions) (Amendment) Act-2021', approval was granted to import one LNG cargo from Ganvar Private Limited, Singapore, from the spot market.

The import of 33 lakh, 60 thousand mmbtu of LNG from Ganvar Private Limited will incur expenses of Tk 469 crore, 78 lakhs, 11 thousand, 518 at USD 10.8637 per mmbtu, a revised rate from the initial USD 9.4965 per mmbtu. Additionally, approval was extended for the procurement of another LNG cargo from Vital Asia Private Limited, Singapore, as proposed by the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources. This entails importing 33 lakh, 60 thousand mmbtu of LNG, amounting to Tk 464 crore, 15 lakh, 95 thousand, 358 at USD 10.7337 per mmbtu, up from USD 9.68 per mmbtu. Previously, during the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement meeting chaired by Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali on April 3, approval had been granted for the purchase of three LNG cargoes from Singapore and Switzerland.
