The interim government has decided to construct a new Shahbagh Police Station building adjacent to the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.
This proposal was approved in Thursday’s meeting of the Advisory Council. The meeting, held at the Chief Advisor’s office, was chaired by Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus.
During the meeting, the Advisory Council approved the proposal for the construction of the Shahbagh Police Station under the project titled “Construction of Independence Monument at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka (Phase III) (First Amendment)” by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs and the Public Works Department.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid informed the media at a press conference held at the Secretariat.
He said, “A new decision has been made regarding the relocation of the Shahbagh Police Station in the capital. The police station will be constructed not behind the Sakura Bar, but adjacent to Suhrawardy Udyan.”
Sheikh Abdur Rashid said that the police station building will be constructed in a suitable location facing the north, occupying the least possible space. The station will be relocated slightly, but it will remain close to its current location.
The Cabinet Secretary added that the new station will be located near Birdem and Dhaka Club. The advisors will finalise the site after inspecting the area.
Sheikh Abdur Rashid mentioned that the current site used for the police station is unhealthy, as it is used for dumping defective vehicles. These will be removed. Additionally, the flower market at the site will be reorganised.
He further explained that relocating the Shahbagh Police Station near Sakura did not seem like a suitable option, as there is a famous international hotel nearby. The owner of the proposed location does not want to offer the space for relocation.
Previously, on June 3, the Cabinet decided to relocate the Shahbagh Police Station from Shahbagh Circle due to the construction of the Independence Monument at Suhrawardy Udyan.
According to the decision, the station was to be relocated behind the Sakura restaurant near the Intercontinental Hotel.
The Cabinet Secretary mentioned that during the meeting, an international-quality documentary on the July-August student uprising was also screened.
