The government has started keeping a close vigilance on its field level officials over whether they are accountable and transparent in their respective jobs, sources in the public administration ministry said. Besides, whether field level officials, especially deputy commissioners, additional deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers are working sincerely to accelerate the pace of various projects in their respective districts and upazilas across the country, is also under the scanner.

In this regard, a coordination meeting of divisional commissioners and high ups of public administration ministry was held in the concerned ministry. According to Cabinet Division sources, some joint secretaries have been assigned to update all field level government officials’ annual confidential reports.

The assigned joint secretaries have also been asked to oversee the activities of the government officials as to whether they are neglecting their job or engaged in corruption and irregularities instead of carrying out their duties. After updating the annual confidential report, the joint secretaries have also been asked to submit those reports to the Cabinet Division immediately.

At the meeting, the divisional commissioners and high ups of public administration ministry discussed the overall activities of the field officials, especially deputy commissioners, additional deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers. The meeting was informed that a section of officials and employees did not attend office timely on showing various excuses, including official or personal work.

As a result, many important government works are also being hampered. And this is also causing the general people to suffer as it slows down government work. The meeting was informed that as a section of field level officials is not paying heed to the government instruction, the implementation of many development projects is being hampered in many ways.

And thus it made the government policymakers including the high command angry, it was informed at the meeting. Later, the decision to increase vigilance on the field level government officials was taken. Apart from ministers and public administration ministry, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has continued asking the deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers to speed up their activities to keep up the ongoing development spree to make Bangladesh a developed and prosperous country.

As the ruling Awami League is running the country with a specific target to turn it into a developed and prosperous one and wants to take it to a dignified position, it has formulated the plan as well as budget. As part of the move, field-level government officers and employees have been directed to remain present at their offices from 9am to 9:40 am on a mandatory basis, aiming to bring dynamism into government activities, as per a cabinet division circular in this regard recently.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her utter dismay saying it would be very regretful if every achievement of the government, which comes through hard work round the clock, goes in vain just because of government officials’ negligence, corruption and misuse of power.
