At least 70 bhori of gold and 600 bhori of silver were stolen from a jewellery shop in Chandrima Bazar in the capital's Mohammadpur area on Sunday night.

The thieves also took gold purchase receipts and Tk4 lakh in cash.

The theft occurred at New Rana Jewellers at around 3:15am, according to the shop's owner, Masud Rana.

Masud said he had closed the shop at around 11pm and returned home. When he came back to open the shop at around 10am today (5 January), he found the scissor gate and shutter locks broken. Upon entering, he discovered that the safe and other items inside the shop had been vandalised.

He said that of the stolen gold, 50 bhori belonged to him, while the remaining 20 bhori had been kept as collateral.

Footage from one of the shop's CCTV cameras shows that at around 3:21am, 6 individuals opened the shutter and entered the shop, while two others stood guard at the gate.

Most of them were wearing caps and face masks, while some had their heads covered with hoodies. The footage shows the suspects carrying jewellery boxes out of the shop.

Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mezbah Uddin confirmed the incident, saying that police are investigating the matter.
