Fuel unloading at Ctg port remains smooth despite Middle East turmoil

Despite ongoing unrest in the Middle East creating uncertainty in global fuel supply, the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) is working to maintain a stable fuel supply in the country by increasing imports from alternative sources. Chittagong Port Authority is also playing a key role in ensuring smooth unloading operations.

Sources indicate that although geopolitical tensions centered in the Middle East are affecting the global market, there has been no major disruption to fuel supply in Bangladesh. Fuel-carrying vessels are regularly arriving at the port, and unloading operations are being conducted swiftly.

According to the latest reports, a vessel carrying approximately 27,000 tons of diesel from Malaysia has recently arrived at the port and is being prioritized for unloading. During March alone, more than 32 fuel-carrying vessels docked at Chittagong Port, from which diesel, crude oil, LPG, and other fuels were unloaded in phases. Additionally, seven more vessels are awaiting unloading.

The port authorities have implemented special measures to avoid any delays in fuel unloading. Close monitoring has been enforced at all stages—docking, unloading, and transportation—to ensure rapid delivery of fuel to different regions across the country.

Meanwhile, BPC has stepped up imports from alternative sources to maintain supply stability. The corporation stated that efforts are ongoing to reduce reliance on the Middle East by importing fuel from countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, India, and the United States. New supply sources are also being explored in line with international market conditions.

BPC officials emphasized that long-term contracts, alongside purchases from the spot market, are being used to ensure supply stability and prevent shortages.

Industry insiders said that imports from multiple sources combined with efficient port management have kept fuel supply in the country stable. Currently, there is no significant risk of a major shortage. Government officials have also confirmed that fuel supply remains stable despite global uncertainties, and steps are being taken to increase storage capacity to address potential future risks.

Observers believe that by diversifying import sources and maintaining fast unloading operations, Chittagong Port Authority is playing a crucial role in ensuring the country’s energy security.
