Form distribution for AL candidates starts Wednesday

The ruling Awami League is going to start distribution of application forms from Wednesday for the party’s nomination in the by-elections to five parliamentary seats, left vacant after BNP MPs’ resignation.

By-elections to the five parliamentary seats are scheduled to be held on February 1 next year.

The aspiring candidates have been asked to collect and submit the forms from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office from 10.30am to 4.30pm on 28 to 31 December, said an AL press release.

The applicants have also been requested to follow and maintain health protocols and not to create crowd during the collection and submission of the application forms.

The the candidates have to bring a photocopy of their respective national identity cards to collect the nomination forms.

The Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule of the by-elections on December 18. 

EC will conduct the by-polls to parliamentary seats -- Thakurgaon-3, Bogura-4, Bogura-6, Chapainawabganj-2 and Brahmanbaria-2.

The Election Commission announced those vacated seats after of Md. Zahidur Rahman of Thakurgaon-3, Md. Mosharof Hosen of Bogura-4, Gulam Mohammad Siraj of Bogura-6, Md. Aminul Islam of Chapainawabganj-2 and Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan of Brahmanbaria-2. They resigned on December 11.

On the same day, Rumeen Farhana from women’s reserved seats also resigned from the parliament.

Meanwhile, another BNP lawmaker, Md Harunur Rashid of Chapainawabganj-3, also resigned recently. But the schedule for the by-poll of the seat is yet to be announced.

The EC secretary said candidates can submit their nomination papers till January 5. Returning officers will scrutinize the nomination papers on January 8 and January 15 has been set as the last date for withdrawal of candidature.
